Tooth Extractions

dental extractions in Nephi UT from Bear Canyon Dental

A tooth that aches all night, cracks on a piece of jerky, or never finished coming in straight can take over your whole week. At Bear Canyon Dental, we take problem teeth out right here in Nephi, UT, so you are not making the drive up the freeway to Provo with an ice pack on your jaw. Dr. Douglas M. Sheets and Dr. Jamie Udell do this work gently, explain each step while it is happening, and get you pointed toward whatever should fill the space. Call us and we will find you a time.

When Does a Tooth Need to Be Extracted?

A tooth comes out when saving it would cost you more in pain, time, and money than replacing it would. The usual reasons we see:

  • Decay that has traveled too far under the gumline for a filling or crown to hold
  • A crack that runs down into the root instead of stopping at the chewing surface
  • Gum disease advanced enough that the tooth has loosened in its socket
  • A baby tooth that will not let go and is blocking the adult tooth behind it
  • Crowding that has to be cleared before braces or aligners have room to work
  • Infection that keeps returning after a root canal

Most teeth never reach that list. The point of our routine family dentistry checkups is to catch problems while a filling still fixes them.

What Is the Difference Between a Simple and a Surgical Extraction?

A simple extraction removes a tooth that is fully visible above the gumline. A surgical extraction is what we use when the tooth has broken off at the gum, is still buried in bone, or sits at an angle under its neighbor.

The simple version often runs twenty to thirty minutes from numbing to gauze. The surgical version takes longer because we open a small window in the gum, sometimes trim a little bone, and occasionally divide the tooth into sections so it exits along a smaller path. Both happen in our office with the area fully numb, and Dr. Sheets has been doing them for more than twenty-eight years.

Does Getting a Tooth Pulled Hurt?

No. You will feel firm pressure and some rocking, but not pain. The area is completely numb before anything starts, and we ask you rather than assuming you are ready.

If the appointment worries you more than the tooth does, say so when you call. We offer nitrous oxide and IV sedation through Summit Anesthesia, and sedation dentistry turns the visit into something you will barely remember. Dr. Sheets and Dr. Udell see patients every week who put this off for years, and nobody here will give you a hard time about it.

What Happens During the Appointment?

The visit is shorter than most people picture. Here is the order:

  • We take a 3D scan to see the roots, the sinus, and the nerve before anything is touched
  • You get numb, and we wait until you tell us the area is fully asleep
  • The tooth is loosened and lifted out, usually within a few minutes
  • Gauze goes in, you bite down, and the bleeding slows inside the first hour
  • We walk through what to expect at home and what would be worth a phone call

If the socket needs a bone graft to hold its shape for a future implant, we place it during the same visit.

How Long Does Recovery Take?

Most people feel like themselves again in three to four days. Swelling peaks around day two and then drops off quickly. The gum closes over the socket in roughly two weeks, and the bone underneath keeps filling in for months after that. Take the first twenty-four hours easy: no heavy lifting, no running, no bending over to load the dishwasher. Ibuprofen handles the soreness for most patients, and lower wisdom teeth tend to run a day or two longer.

What Can You Eat Afterward?

Soft, cool, and nothing that requires suction. A rough guide for the first few days:

  • Day one: yogurt, applesauce, lukewarm soup, smoothies eaten with a spoon
  • Days two and three: scrambled eggs, mashed potatoes, oatmeal, soft pasta
  • Back to normal once chewing on that side stops feeling tender
  • Hold off on chips, popcorn, nuts, and seeds until the gum has closed over

Straws, smoking, and forceful rinsing cause more trouble in the first forty-eight hours than any food.

How Do You Avoid Dry Socket?

Protect the blood clot for the first three days and you will almost certainly be fine. Dry socket happens when that clot gets knocked loose or breaks down early, leaving bone and nerve endings exposed. It announces itself as a deep, throbbing ache two to four days out that often radiates toward the ear.

It is uncomfortable but very treatable, and a quick visit to clean and pack the site usually settles it within a day. Nearly all of extraction aftercare comes down to leaving the area alone: no straws, no smoking, no poking at it with your tongue, and gentle salt water swishing instead of vigorous rinsing. Seeing how the clot shields the bone and nerves underneath makes those rules easier to take seriously.

When Should Wisdom Teeth Come Out?

Usually between sixteen and twenty-two, before the roots finish forming. At that age the roots are short and the bone is more forgiving, so healing goes faster. We track them on X-rays through the teen years and only recommend wisdom tooth removal when there is a reason for it: an impacted tooth pushing into the molar ahead of it, repeated infection in the gum flap over a partly erupted tooth, a cyst forming around the crown, or no room in the jaw for them to arrive straight. Wisdom teeth that come in upright and cause no trouble are welcome to stay.

What Are the Options for Replacing a Missing Tooth?

For a back tooth you chew on, an implant is usually the strongest long-term answer. For a front tooth, the right choice depends on your bite, your bone, and your budget. The tooth replacement options we provide in house are single implants, bridges, and partial dentures.

Dr. Sheets is a course director for Hiossen Implant Co. and trains other dentists in implant placement, so the removal, the graft, and the implant all happen with one team in one building. Look through the full range of restorative and implant treatments we offer before you decide. Leaving a molar gap alone has its own cost: neighboring teeth drift toward the space and the tooth above grows down into it.

How Much Does It Cost to Have a Tooth Removed?

It depends on which tooth it is and how it has to come out, so we give you the exact number before you agree to anything. Straightforward dental extractions sit at the low end. Surgical cases, impacted wisdom teeth, sedation, and bone grafting add to it.

We are in network with most major plans, we accept Medicaid, and we offer Cherry financing when a larger plan is easier to handle monthly. No surprise invoices. We go over the estimate, what your benefits pick up, and what is left for you while you are still in the chair.
